When the creators of Batman came up with Robin, they gave the Dark Knight someone to talk to AND cut down on the amount of thought balloons needed per story, for Bruce Wayne to converse with (other than himself).

But what did Bruce Wayne do AFTER Dick Grayson went off to Hudson University (the nearby college in the Batman mythos)?

Easy…he already had a butler in place who knew his secret identity for almost 30 years!

Yes, Alfred Beagle (yes, originally a different name) made his debut back in the 40s in the pages of Batman #16. In Batman #216 and #217, Dick made his intentions known and flew the coop (no bird/Robin pun intended here) for further education.
